There's a song I revile more than any other. Even more than Copa Cabana. Even more than *anything* from Brittany.

Red Letter Day by the Get Up Kids.

They're a whiney bullshit Emo band.

And the first time I heard of them and heard that song was on a tape that Jason sent me after we had broken up again. I remember telling Dave and Spank about it and having them roll around on the ground just too fucking pleased. They'd just met Jason not too long before and he was "the weird guy with the glasses" to differentiate him from "the weird guy with the hair" (Brent, long blonde hair, way too clingy, holocaust thin, perpetually cold, dated for 2 weeks before he said "I love you" too many times and we became 'friends').
"The weird guy with the glasses sent you a get up kids song? heheh... you know he's sitting at home screaming "FUCK YOU, BIIIITCH" and rockin out! yeah! ::metal horns::: "
Emo kids.
beh.
anyway.. the song I hate...
""One Year Later" and "Red Letter Day" mix the juvenile snotrocket punk of Blink 182 with the Midwestern Camero anthems of John Cougar. But really, it just sounds like the Promise Ring with nasally vocals, country production, and gratuitous pick- scrapes.

As far as the band's sound, well... the Connells come to mind, and the Get Up Kids should be punished for that synaptic response alone. "Forgive and Forget" comes frighteningly close to those Goo Goo Dolls songs that the Ricky Lake- lookin' bass player writes and sings. In fact, a latent "about to become the Goo Goo Dolls" feel runs throughout the entire EP. I mean, at least their debut featured the sonic boom of Bob Weston's production. Red Letter Day, on the other hand, should be pointed in the direction of music advisors planning Drew Barrymore soundtracks at Hollywood Records." Here

You've got some nerve I never knew
what with the world we gave away infront of you.
I see it all much clearer now.
You're just a phase I've gotten over anyhow.
It's over. I'm not giving in again.
We're loyal like brothers, just us versus all the others.
I trusted misleading promises worth repeating.
How could you do this to me?
Red letter day that I learn.
I'm sure you get what you deserve.
I see it all much clearer since
I'm far past the point of this.
If it's a lie, I don't want to be the one who signed.
I'm not the one who falls down.
It's over now.
If you want to try....
Try and forget it.
It's over.
I'm gone.

I'm a lyrics person... I don't find their lyrics all that intriguing, just a lot of tried and true emo cliches.
I'm not a fan of EMO in the first place... all the singers sound the same.
The closest thing to emo that I dig is The Weakerthans, newest band from a former member of Propaghandi. And that's really in SPITE of the weak music, in SPITE of his very very whiney voice, and all because of the brilliance of his lyrics.
Even then, I can't listen to it much.

the lyrics are the beautiful thing about the get up kids.

can you sleep as the sounds hit your ear, one at a time?
an unspoken balance here. my bridge for so many years.
as i stare at receivers, to receive her isn't fair.
don't worry i'll catch you. don't worry i'll catch you.
don't ever worry.
