the g-f people convinced me to read Cryptonomicon again.
And I'm enjoying it this time.
There's a crazy character working in the Ultra/Mega group who's just popped up and instituted the use of Radio Games.
And he's REALLY excited about it.
So he keeps shouting it.
FUNKSPIEL!

it's funny, gaddamit

Cool. Has Waterhouse grown on you? I ended up really liking his parts the best I think.

I like *all* of it... the WW2 sections the best, of course.. and I liked Waterhouse from the get go when he was in princeton trying to understand number theory from Rudy and ALan.

But I think Bobby Shaftoe's bits are my favorite right now.

And Enoch Root.
I liked Enoch Root from the beginning too.

Which, of course, begs the question "Why did you find it so hard first time round?"

because I hit the part with the first meeting of amy shaftoe, found it boring, put it down, and never bothered to pick it back up.

Keep in mind, I was also much less of a geek then.

I've been changed. ::nods::

Ken and Chuck that changed me?

Chuck is a raver/goth/club boy who's incredibly superficial despite all his high falutin' idealism.
He's just BARELY geeky... to the point where *I* fixed the res issues on his home hunk of junk PC.

And Ken, while a geek, isn't the overwhelming geek that it would take to change me.

I originally picked it up while dating Jason, a nominal geek who, it seemed (based on things I've encountered since), went out of his way to make me think that I should just stick to weird books and language becuase I'd NEVER understand geekness.

Now, if you mean who changed my mind about the book, that would be you and Ken.

1)g-f people?

Goats-fans people.
Goats... online comic (http://www.goats.com)
Goats-fans... the e-list that was created by Jon Rosenberg (creator of goats) vaguely for talking about the comic but turned into a free for all. (aka G:tML)
As they're represented on Lj, they are (in no particular order, and I'll even include the ones I don't like) : Punkalicia, LuvRhino, Wendingo, Frobisher, Subbes, Skriedle, Ragdoll13, albertoromero, me, and The Mason brothers (can't remember the names of their journals because they're both wankers)

2)cryptonomicon?

Cryptonomicon</a> is a book by Neal Stephenson, author of Snow Crash
I attempted to read it over a year ago, hated it.
The G-f people (namely simon and ken) convinced me to give it another shot.
It's over 900 pages long... so it's good that I actually like it.

3)ultra/mega group?

Ultra is the highest american military clearance you can get.
Mega is the highest british military clearance you can get.
In this book, they talk about a NEW classification for a detachment called 2072... that classification is Ultra/Mega and so secret, they can't even mention that it exists to anyone OUTSIDE the Ultra/Mega group.

4)radio games?

Funkspiel.
The german word for 'radio games'
FUNKSPIEL!
and it's not really funny if you haven't read it.

the person who replied with "BWAHAHAHAAH" got it just fine.

it sounds funny
but it helps when you understand the joke

Read the book
