Have you tried changing the "Connect only at **" option in the dialup preferances?

I didn't need to.
this problem occurs now and again. I've not changed any settings and i'm connecting just fine at 48K right now. The problem is the local computer I'm dialing into with earthlink.

By the way ... *why* would you have the 'connect only at' set anyway?
I just looked and realized that I don't have that option marked and I don't think I ever have.

So yeah ...explain. Why would you?

Re:
Because then it will only connect at or around that speed. It works well with all the dialup accounts i've ever had.

uh.. yeah .. I understand what it does, I just don't know why it would be preferable.
I dunno.
Nevermind.

But after 3 hours of trying just to check my mail, 14k is quite alright.

I dunno.
I'll ask someone who's uh .. more familiar with me brain and why this baffles me.

Unless DUN has changed, that option is for what the BBS community used to call 'Port locking' Telling it to only communicate with the modem at that speed, you're still limited to whatever your modem negotiates (Which can be controlled with AT codes)to.

The only + to having that checked, that I know of, is it ensures the buffers on your modem remain full at all times...

Really?
I haven't had any problems with Earthlink. I have it for travellign for work so I can dial in just about anywhere. I've almost always gotten decent connections, even in hotels which usually have lousy phones.

Hope your speed improves!

Re: Really?
I didn't have problems until the past month.
And it very well may not be earthlink at all, but the phone company. They're laying new line for DSL expansion (my connection rates have jumped just from going over new line and the elimination of all the annoying noise).

Chad pointed out to me that work going on as far as 5 miles away could definitely have an effect on the noise problems and that could keep the locak network from picking me up.

Usually when I'm being frustrated, I'm being frustrated in *general* .. names aren't important.

Re: Really?
Ah.

Yeah, the phone company just sucks. Doesn't matter which one. I haven't heard good things about any of them.

But if they are putting DSL in your area, that could be a very good thing.

Re: Really?
That is a problem. I wanted DSL here, but was too far to get any decent service so I have a cable modem. It's $55/month but that includes basic cable tv (which I didn't have before). Before I was paying $25/month for the ISP and was thinking about a second phone line.

It seems that comcast hs finally gotten it's head out of it's ass and the service is working well. And it is wonderful for paying UT online.

Not bragging, mind you. Just offering ideas.

Re: Really?
yeah, if I could afford that it would be nice too.

I don't understand why every 3rd person has to try to sell me on DSL or cable modem.
I'm not a total idiot, so isn't it pretty obvious that I am not in a position to get something like that at the moment, not that I simply haven't noticed that it's available.

yes. It would be nice.
But no, I really can't do it right now.

Re: Really?
Sorry- I didn't know your experiences. I was tempted to go back to dialup while Comcast was screwing around.

So am I the third person? Does that give you two sales-free people now? :)

Re: Really?
You aren't the third person.
I said "every third person"
You're probably actually the 10th or 12th.
