I think i'm just going to start skewering all sorts of hallmarks of the sci-fi/fantasy communities, even things I enjoy, just to watch their defenders scramble all over themselves to defend them.

2001, (sorry Chad)
Dr. Who (sorry Dave)
ALL FANTASY BOOKS (sorry gates, sorry Midn1te)
MST3K (sorry anyone with any taste)

It should be soooooooo much fun.

I happen to like MST3K. Of course, I never purported to have any taste.

And I like 2001, if for no other fact than it showed how Kubrik could pass off glycerine, corm syrup, and food coloring as space-age special effects.

uhm.... yes.... There was a reason it said sarcastic was my mood.
Also, I was apologizing to anyone with any taste for wanting to mock MST3k.
I think anyone with ANY taste should enjoy it.

If you can find a single description of "all fantasy books" that covers ... well... anything I actually like, go ahead.

i'm back from vacation and have a buttload of pent up pedantry that's in need of venting...
That wasn't so much of a skewering as it was a listing of things deserving to be skewered, now was it?

You're going to have to put a little more effort into your skewering if you want to maximize the amount of scrambling by addle-minded defenders.

Besides, Barry Hughart's three fantasy books (esp. Bridge of Birds) are wonderful.

Yes, but you only say that because of the slight flaw in your character.

No, it wasn't a skewering, nor was it meant to be, nor did I say that it was.

Just to be clear on 2001
Are we talking the book or the movie?

I really liked the book but the movie just didn't do it for me. I know it is THE sci-fi movie, but aside from being impressed at the special effects of that time I wasn't as impressed with the movie as I hoped to be.

BTW, wasn't it just the other day you were complaining about people being argumenttive and now you are fomenting discontent? :)

Re: Just to be clear on 2001
I've never been able to sit through the movie, but chad thinks I'll really enjoy the book.
::shrug::: we'll see.

And I might as well START the arguments as it seems that just expressing opinions at all makes people want to go out of their way to get to my journal and argue with me about them.

Re: Just to be clear on 2001
I think the problem with the movie is that while it was impressive and new for its time, the premise has been covered a billions times since then and the FX have improved too. So then it was amazing anfd ground breaking, but now it is another sci-fi movie.

The book still hold up over time, I think. I liked it at least :)

Re: Just to be clear on 2001
The thing about the movie for *me* is the 20 minute silences.
I realize that was to make a point about the opressive silence of space and to also create a creepy, suffocating air about the piece...
But it suffocates me into extreme boredom.
