I think i'm just going to start skewering all sorts of hallmarks of the sci-fi/fantasy communities, even things I enjoy, just to watch their defenders scramble all over themselves to defend them.

2001, (sorry Chad)
Dr. Who (sorry Dave)
ALL FANTASY BOOKS (sorry gates, sorry Midn1te)
MST3K (sorry anyone with any taste)

It should be soooooooo much fun.

Re: Just to be clear on 2001
I think the problem with the movie is that while it was impressive and new for its time, the premise has been covered a billions times since then and the FX have improved too. So then it was amazing anfd ground breaking, but now it is another sci-fi movie.

The book still hold up over time, I think. I liked it at least :)

Re: Just to be clear on 2001
The thing about the movie for *me* is the 20 minute silences.
I realize that was to make a point about the opressive silence of space and to also create a creepy, suffocating air about the piece...
But it suffocates me into extreme boredom.

Re: Just to be clear on 2001
The worst part of it was, it inspired a whole decade worth of sci-fi movies that did the SAME DAMNED THING. Try watching "Silent Running" sometime.

Re: Just to be clear on 2001
Oh come on, Silent Running had Bruce Dern...

Of course, I lost track of things, and thought you were talking about Dune, which would be silly, as Silent Running predates it by 13 years...

Oh, and "Dark Star." That too.

But Dark Star is cool! It even tells its own producer to fuck off!

Re: Just to be clear on 2001
I know a film teacher who thinks it's one of the best movies ever because it favors the visual over the aural so much. I've always been on the fence on that one...

Really, 2001 is best watched in a course on Kubrick, so you can examine it in relation to his other work. In situ, as it were, it's probably best watched in the company of lots of hallucinagenics.
