If you took goofy lil snapshots of your friends or a lot of self pics with a webcam and treat them like they were actual difficult photography?

Would you call yourself a 'web designer' or 'graphic artist' becuase you drew a really really really bad picture or two when you were 14 and are now taking a community college class using corel?

Would you post a link to a site you 'designed' that is nothing more than a big blue photoshopped X on a black background and a list of links in a PHOTOGRAPHY community and then get bitchy when people asked you WHY?

Would you break your arm patting yourself on the back for learning how to process black and white film (at school.. ya know.. where they teach you how.....) in the school provided dark room with the school provided enlarger, paper, chemicals and instructions?

people annoy me.
People with no talent who think they're artists annoy me even more.

let's see...

the error message on the ad that greets you when you come to this webpage notwithstanding, my first problem with the page is that background. there is an X that greets you when you get there. (and what the hell is that about? copyright infringement? the X files? is there porn there? it makes no sense to me. but maybe i am just ignorant...) if you think about it, THEN you scroll down to see the rest of the page... which has a second X on it. wait - is it the XX page? do i get to see nekkid male AND female parts on it? if you wanna do this sort of thing, kiddies, then make the top half a welcome mat and THEN have the second page pop up immediately...

not to mention that when i click on some of the links, i get a "sorry but this won't be avail for another hour" message from the provider. nothing is more annoying. get a reliable provider, or don't ask people to take a look.

i used to do this stuff professionally in another life (i chose to do very little on my own page -- and my graphics suck moose since i had no time to fiddle with it, being a mom and all, but i also don't tell people to go to my website since it is more of a holding space for me for the day when i do have a hot second to design and code... like in 5 years ;-)

grr. it's ok to be an amateur -- we all had to learn -- and continue to learn, sometime, but:
1) post appropriate material in certain forums;
2) don't claim to be a professional since it insults some amazing people who truly are; and
3) don't drive traffic to a site that can't handle it.

ok, i held back. a little ;-)

I patted myself on the back for learning to process black and white film.

It made little sense to me until I figured out it was like cooking.

Of course, while I was attempting to learn how to process film, I was also editor in chief, copy editor, layout editor, head ad manager, sole ad designer, entertainment editor and assignment editor of a college paper with a staff of 50, and getting about three hours of sleep a night.

After a month of that, the smurfs start looking complicated.

See, I patted myself on the back for it too when I learned (and I wasn't doing *nearly* the number of things you had on your plate), but I didn't pretend that it made me somehow more artistic or a better photographer.

And I would say that the smurfs *are* complicated. No matter how much sleep you're getting.

I think someone took the entry out, it says that there was no such entry. Anyway, I'll admit I thought I had talent...until High School. Though my friend has talent, but his aggorance and ignorance to other styles will be the death of him. His Animation work is very clean-cut though...

...even if he acts like a self-loving goon...

It's not the lack of talent... *I* lack talent...it's the fact that these people don't *realize* that.

And uh .. all the people who praise the people who don't realize. "here's a moody looking pic of myself taken with my super grainy webcam that I then tweaked with a gamma correction filter in windows photo editor so it's like all... artistic and stuff...tada!"

"oooohh.. you're really PREEEETTY"

guh. kill.

Hey, just stumbled upon your journal and I saw that girl's post too.

Although I do try to be tolerant, people like that annoy me. I almost never like self-portraits, but an awful grainy self-portrait done with a crappy webcam is the worst when passed off as 'art'. And then getting all defensive and taking everything so seriously. Also posting 10 mediocre pictures does not make 1 good picture! Something I've definitely learned through my own personal exploration of photography is it says a lot more if you just show the very best. Ok I'm done ranting. Just wanted to say I feel your pain :)
