Ocracoke Spice Cake

This was originally a fig cake that used fig preserves. It was good, but I like my version with the orange better.

3 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking soda (disolved in a little hot water)
2 cups flour
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup fat free buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup orange marmelade

Preheat Oven to 325 degrees, grease a bunt pan or an angel food pan (tube pan)
Beat eggs. Add sugar and oil and beat until incorporated and thick. Add baking soda.
sift together all dry ingredients and mix into sugar mixture.
Add buttermilk, extract, pecans and marmelade and mix well.
Pour into pan and bake 45min - 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted into cake comes out clean.
Let cool in the pan for a few minutes before turning out onto a plate.
After it cools dust it with some powdered sugar to make it all preeeeeetty.

and this is what it looks like... after I sampled it..

And I was reading the new revised version (with new, more accurate translations) of Popul Vuh, the Mayan book of the Dawn of Life.
In the preface there are some notes on the translation and this prayer for the 'daykeepers' to recite before they enter the shrine to study the book:
Make my guilt vanish,
Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth;
do me a favor,
give me strength, give me courage
in my heart, in my head,
since you are my mountain and my plain;
may there be no falsehood and no stain,
and may this reading of the Popul Vuh
come out clear as dawn,
and may the sifting of ancient times
be complete in my heart, and in my head;
and make my guilt vanish,
my grandmothers, grandfathers,
and however many souls of the dead there may be,
you who speak with the Heart of Sky and Earth,
may all of you together give strength
to the reading I have undertaken.

I like that.
