Guh... I just went over and scrolled through debate.
It's just a seething, writhing, pustuled bag of stupid.
30 posts on who the dumb new person/troll in their midst might be. Conspiracy theories... 'could it be so and so?' 'no, I think it's like this...' 'oh we are *so* fun and funny for talking about this! teehee!' 'look at my deep analytical insight!'

Vomit puke and piss, man.

They're still acting as if using the phrase "ad homien" makes them intelligent somehow while at the same time more or less playing "smack the new guy."
We did it on the GF list all the time, but ya know what? We were all just honestly more intelligent. Really. Because if the person wasn't an idiot (or Allie) most of us backed off right away and only administered the occasionally jab to let them know that we COULD haze them if we really WANTED to.

I don't understand how you could get through with some long inane ramblings conspiracy like theories on who this particular idiot in your midst is and then still honestly believe that you're simply the more intelligent creature here.
Maybe it really is all in fun and the edge that I'm reading in people's words isn't there. But it certainly looks like rabid infighting and fierce protection of territory to me.

You mean you flirted with a chick ON DEBATE, right?

Becuase you certainly can't mean that you flirted with someone for the first time AT ALL in 6 months...

Well, I don't think it's any secret that I have done more than my fair share of shit talking in that community. But it was ... occasional. More than not there were serious, or at least not simply bullshit posts there.
I just can't believe that it's gotten *that* bad, and with the same people for the most part that I thought were the more well reasoned, 'seasoned debaters' who had a tendency to keep things on track.

I took it off the friends list months ago and stopped reading it entirely (and left the community) about a month ago partially because of my recent cocooning and getting rid of assholes, partially because it was boring and lame, and particually because I realized that even the moderator was only in it for the ego stroke, not for any real exchange of ideas.
Now I guess I'm glad that I did.

And hey, there's nothing wrong with the occasional venting or shit flinging or what have you. But the people who are doing it over there non stop... jeeze... anger management, people.... it's a good thing.

I've recently had it out with absolutcalm myself. I was never much fond of him to begin with, but I read his journal for awhile becuase sometimes overblown intellectuals either amuse me or they suprise me by occasionally saying something insightful.
He failed to do either. His online presence *period* is self aggrandizing. From his chip on the shoulder "I'm a young black man" schtick to his "I'm an athiestic child of a religious mother" routine, he really seems to believe that these insignifigant qualifiers about him somehow make him worthy and *important* to listen to.

He has problems with women because he sees them as chattle. He's drawn to bondage and domination because he's got no power or dominance over women without it being a mutually agreed upon fantasy.
I think anyone with the sort of seering insight he claims to posess would see those things.

But, lookit me, veering wildly from the topic...

Debate and elitedebate are just other places for him to exert his pompous, pseduo-intellectual will so that he can feel like he's really something special. He apparently needs that.

The other people in debate who feel the need to push everyone around (ikilled007 namely) have much the same issues. Call it a disease.

I just looked at the community again after a long while and I can say that there is some good debate going on in there. Particularly, the great long-winded, persistent, and thoroughly thorough Socratic.

Of course, there seems to be an endless stream of new Liberharians, tirelessly trying to convince us of how great a "libertarian state" would be.

The libertarians in and of themselves never really bothered me so much. I always took their scenarios to be "in a perfect world" fantasy, "oh look how it could be, if only..." sort of rants and I think they do too.

The thing about political party affiliations in debate that annoyed me the most (besides the people who really think there's a meaningful difference between those parties) was the sheer cartoonishness of thought; The way that everyone was the characature extreme of whatever their affiliation was.
Part of that meant that any liberal voices was easily shunted off with a little screaming and then it would leave just two conservatives, rabbiting on about economics at each other, allowing the liberal the time to go post on the "Killing babies and drinking them for healthful, protein rich breakfast drinks... is it wrong or an idea who's time is far overdue?" debate.

I'm not liberal, conservative, or libertarian. And I've never understood how anyone who isn't just buying a whole party line could be without exception on every issue.
But it still annoyed me that on the topics where I lean to a liberal slant there was not ONE person there who would speak up about it who wasn't a total reactionary buffoon.

Socratic is someone I've always liked reading, but his meandering posting style usually leaves me wondering what his argument really was.

Re:
I hear ya~

Those are indeed good criticisms of that community. Best to drop in once in a while though, to stick a little dissent into a plae that should be full of it.
