"nigger" isn't okay. "spic" is pretty taboo.
"wetback", "jigaboo", "coon", hell,... even "colored" is out.

But it's okey dokey to call anyone of middle eastern decent a "raghead", "towelhead" "camel jockey", "sand nigger" (that's a particularly lovely one)... or what have you.

How very fucking evolved.
It makes me angry every time I see it. But even more so when I see people who I gave the benefit of the doubt to parading their ignorance like a fucking soccer hooligan.

what about honkies?
i've always been fond of being called that...it just sounds funny...hon-key.

but in a serious note, we live in vey scary times...we're losing the war, ignorance is winning.
it's sad.

Well, a jokey answer would be that I prefer cracker (well that's not really jokey. "cracker" always amuses me more than 'honkey')

The serious answer would be that it's really really not the same. Not that racial slurs are okay for *anyone*, but heh... what white guy was ever left feeling degraded, subjugated and abused because someone called him 'honkey'?

And for the second part... yeah... I know.
in so many little ways every single day... I know.

We live in such mindless times, people want to just consume, root for the winning team, always be right...it's scary how lazy intellectually we've become. Everyone prefers their bliss...

No wonder everyone is some form of an escapist.

Interestingly, this is along the lines of a conversation I had over a year ago at work. One of the people I work with is the company's director of minority sourcing. We have to spen da certain percentage with minority suppliers. Accepted minorities are african-american, latino, asian, american indian, and pacific-indian. Middle-eastern is not an accepted minority catagory.

So that seems to indicate that that group is not viewed the same as the others, which doesn't make much sense to me.

In my observation, every group of humans has to have at least one other group of humans available to serve as a scapegoat. Otherwise, they all go bughouse and start sniping from the clocktower.

Well sure... but my targets are more WWF fans or mall people. I think that there is such an enormous scope of very particular things to dislike about people that it's a cop out and a sign of an extreme lack of creativity to blame the plight of the world on people because of the color of their skin.
C'mon! pick an *interesting* reason.

I've used the term towelhead before, but that's because I think it sounds funny and at the time I was ranting a bit about all of the 9/11 and G-Dubbya nonsense.
I don't use the term nigger, but when I'm talking to my (mostly) white friends, we jokingly use the word nigga, (in reference to each other.. and no, we don't drive goofy cars or hang our pants off of our asses). I don't consider myself an ignorant racist because of these things, but I could see how someone who comes from a much more diverse community would.
The only person of middle-eastern descent that I can think of, who I've seen here in town, would be a member of the family that runs the gas station down the block. Not exactly breaking away from the Kwikie-Trip 'How may I help you?' stereostype, eh? (And for the record, he doesn't say that, he says "What's up dogg?", EVERY TIME).

The only time I interact with a group of people where the MAJORITY of them are MINORITIES is when I play basketball at the local 2-year college on weeknights. I don't use the word "nigga" there, I'm not stupid, and it would never be my intention to use it around someone who would take it as an insult coming from a white person, as I think most black folks would.

As for "towel heads".. oh well.. when the government clarifies that there's a difference between Iraq/Saddam Hussein/Taliban/Afghanistan and anything else that is middle east, I'll raise my standards for everyone else. Until then, I can't really blame anyone for thinking that everyone over there is a terrorist. Welcome to America, love it or leave it (or change it or tolerate it).

There's an ignorant texan idiot in the white house who wasn't even elected. Heh, I think waiting for the government to make a distinction amoungst the very very distinct groups in the middle east is a little silly, as our President usually has problems distingushing between huge established western european countries.

The person I saw using the term 'raghead' tonight said "osama bin laden or some other raghead', which may sound fine given the times and the general sentiment toward osama, but 'raghead' or 'towelhead' was never in reference to just terrorists, or just the bad guys. It was a religious slur, first and foremost and then a racial slur.

I dunno... there are't a lot of japanese people around here (lots of filipino, lots of chinese, a growing Korean population), but I wouldn't use the word 'slope' becuase of my lack of exposure to them.
I guess I'm in a minority of people (and I'm not judging here... it's just true) who don't really think about people based on skin color. Hell, I don't even describe people as "a black guy" or "a white guy" ... it's "the guy in the blue shorts with the bald head" or "that dude over there with the red shirt"

blah blah and on and on...

Basically, if you're going to use racial slurs, any of them, and then claim that you're a clean slate in the racial prejudice arena, you're full of shit.

And if the guy at the quick stop place there has an accent like Abu on the simpsons, he's probably Indian and Hindu, not Islamic or middle eastern.
Hehe.. they also look very different, but well... to a lot of people that's as incomprehensible as different asian peoples looking different. ::shrug:: lack of exposure I guess.

Oct. 3rd, 2002 09:51 am (UTC)
Crapola.. yeah, I know Abu is Indian.. that was a brain fart on my part mentally, I guess India isn't *quite* "Middle East".
Oct. 3rd, 2002 03:25 pm (UTC)
India and Pakistan are both part of Asia. ::nods::

Oct. 3rd, 2002 08:22 pm (UTC)
So's the Middle East.

Oct. 3rd, 2002 09:18 pm (UTC)
hehe... sure.
Oct. 3rd, 2002 02:17 am (UTC)
Well, I tried to, and then you yelled at me.
Oct. 3rd, 2002 07:22 am (UTC)
I think you're making things up.

an interesting reason
i shared an office with a Vietnamese fella for a few years. we talked about this same type of thing, and he told me that in Vietnam, they dont like Australians. Why? Well they're all the way down at the bottom of the earth. Then he pantomimed looking down and waving.. "Hi down there! I'm up here!"

*shrug* better than skin color. not by much though. ;)
