I made the mistake of taking a quick look at <lj comm=debate> the other day and there was the <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/talkpost.bml?journal=debate&itemid=1301693" target="_blank">following topic</a>:
<lj-cut text="Political stuff herein">
<blockquoteI hate to post twice in one day but....
Why is it that every topic in here is like a bad version of six-degrees of seperation from Kevin Bacon? You can post any topic and somehow some over zealous party line tunnel-visioned democrat will find a way to link it to Florida.

Normal Human :
"Do you think Scott Rolen will play in the World series?"

Freak Democrat:
"Don't the Cardinals play in Busch stadium?"

N.H. "yup"
F.D. "they got Rolen from the phillies right?"
N.H. "yup"
F.D. "the phillies have spring training in Clearwater right?"
N.H. "I think so."
F.D. "Clearwater is in Florida right?"
N.H. "yup"
F.D. "Bush stole the election in Florida"
N.H. "I need new friends"

Just let it go. The horse is dead. Why can't you just let it go?</blockquote>

And, stupid me... <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=debate&itemid=1301693&thread=35867069" target="_blank">I responded</a>.
Now, I should have known better. I really should have. That forum is nothing but libertarians, republicans, and a few *very* way off the charts liberals. Reading that forum, it's easy to understand why anyone considered "liberal" could just be lumped into the idiot category. First of all, no one rebuts the libertarians. And if they do, it's a very lame rebuttal.
It's supposedly a forum for the exchange of ideas, but it's more a conservative circle jerk (tiny, measured jerking?) than an actual arena for intellectual thought.

This is a group of people who spent days talking about all the interesting ways they wished John Walker Lindh would be killed before he stood trail. They were serious.
Aside from the ignorant race baiting, the one sided 'political' discussions, the ego-stroking and the *banal* courses of topics, the moderator is a self important dip who thinks that because he's black and not a gang banger he deserves a medal.

So yeah. I should have known better than to respond. I'm just glad most of the flaming went on above me and not to me.

Debate has gone far downhill. It used to be pretty good, but it went downhill around the elite_debate thing. I don't have much use for the "debating" that goes one there, especailly since it isn't debating. It is more flaming then anything else. Even the self-proclaimed 15 year old debate expert couldnt be bothered to respond to individual points is the rebuttals. Everyone there picks a phrase or word and harps on it, ignoring anything else, and rarely using logic. It is pretty sad.

Actually, *you're* still wrong, but you're still okay by me.

No, I knew you weren't flaming me. That's why I said I was glad it went on above me and not at me.
I wasn't around for JFK's election scandal... I was around for Bush's.
Like I said, I think we've read very different accounts of what happened in the elections and when you take all of it into consideration, though the things Gore did don't really paint him as perfect, they were tiny counterattacks to the Bush buddies onslaught. I dunno... If I have the time, I'll find some articles from sources you might believe (nothing from Michael Moore or Noam Chomsky, right?).

Hehe... Nixon was a good president?

Basically, I find the wholesale mockery of the 'democratic' process (because it hasn't really been that for a long time) something worth getting and staying pissed about.

Of course, I'm still pissed about the average CEO making 300% more than his average employee and the Billions in tax relief handed out to the top grossing corporations every year and then the way they manipulate the tax laws so that the fed actually ends up OWING them money. But those are things I've been pissed about since high school.
