I shouldn't read the news

''After more than two centuries of American jurisprudence and millennia of human experience, a few judges and local authorities are presuming to change the most fundamental institution of civilization,'' the president said in urging Congress to approve such an amendment. ''Their action has created confusion on an issue that requires clarity.''

What is he talking about?
Freedom? Democracy? Equality?
Nope... same sex marriage.

Marriage cannot be severed from its ''cultural, religious and natural'' roots, Bush said in the White House's Roosevelt Room. It was a statement that was sure to please his conservative backers.

...In San Francisco, city officials have issued thousands of marriage licenses, to people of the same sex. This, Bush said, is contrary to state law. ''Unless action is taken, we can expect more arbitrary court decisions, more litigation, more defiance of the law by local officials - all of which adds to uncertainty,'' Bush said.

Yes. Dear LORD... how horrible it is when city officials change laws through natural need and desire of their constituency. Much better to hold on to laws that are not the will of the people who live under those laws. How *dare* those judges.

And while this isn't ideal:

Sen. John Kerry, Bush's likely Democratic opponent in this year's election, says he opposes gay marriages. But he also opposes a federal constitutional amendment to ban them, because he says it is an issue for the states to decide, spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said Tuesday.

At least it's SANE.
He doesn't support it (fine, whatever), but he doesn't want to CHANGE OUR CONSTITUTION to specifically ban it.

What the FUCK is wrong with this gaddamned country when over half of the people in it, in any given poll, are in favor of making it illegal for people to get married. Why are they so fucking THREATENED by that?
All this makes me so damned angry that I just don't have the words for it, or to even get out what it is that makes me so damned angry. It's especially vile that most of these people will invoke the name of a god to justify their insane, hateful behavior. Especially considering how incredibly misguided they are in thinking that the message of their faith can IN ANY WAY translate into this sort of intolerance.

I am personally threatened by gay marriage, because women are sexier than men and I think that Merlin would leave me for some hottie chick with great legs that I'd never, EVER have a chance with.

See, if Bush had said that, I'd be more sympathetic.

I'd still be horrified by what he's trying to enact, but at least it would be slightly amusing and probably help him lose the upcoming election.

If ever there were a year for the super liberals and youngins and big talking idealistic kids to register to vote, this is it.

Granted, Kerry isn't exactly the liberal dynamo they'd hope for, but at this point, Bush is to the right of Mussolini.

... that's a pretty "guy" thing of you to say, Gates.
Which for some reason actually suprises me.

probably shouldn't, huh?

I've tried calling you at the last number you splashed about in the journal but you (or anyone else for that matter) never answer, and it just rings. Wrong number? wrong phone?

Saying "'guy' things" is a useful trick, now and then. It keeps people appropriately confused.

Is that a 360- area code number? If not, it's out of date. If it is... I dunno. I'm certainly sitting on one NOW....
