SO the cicada thing continues.
The big 17 year cicadas are out and loud as hell in the trees. I suppose some could say that the sound is a good sound, and I liked it the first day, but now with all of them in the trees going nuts every morning it all just sounds to me like 5 or 6 car alarms going off at once.

But now that the big cicadas are out and doing their thing, there is a second wave of their smaller relatives that have a shorter life cycle. They're all out there hatching now. The front of the house has more bug than brick. I don't ick easily with bugs... but that's FUCKING GROSS.

I just had to sweep the front step because the cases, the nymphs that didn't make it a safe drying place in time to avoid the birds, the deformed cicadas that have curled up wings that didn't unfurl correctly, were literally *carpetting* it. You couldn't see the concrete for all the dying bugs.

And of course, Mika thinks this is a bug buffet. So going outside means watching her closely, trying not to step on anything in the grass, and yelling "drop it" a lot when she invariably tries to eat some of them.

guuuh .

Immediately after chewing one up and attempting to swallow it she goes into a hacking coughing fit for about 10 minutes trying to get its little hard to swallow body out of her throat.

She never puts "hacking and unable to breath, distress" together with "the bug I was attempting to chew up".
