It's just more proof that the struggle for civil rights is no where near over.

On a related note ... my state now has the first openly gay governor.

Nah, public officials have been getting thrown out of office for fucking the wrong sex for centuries. Edward the Second of England comes rapidly to mind.

Edward Hyde, Lord Cornbury, was a Colonial Governor of New York and New Jersey from 1702 - 1708 and he dressed in women's clothes because, he said, he wished to represent Queen Anne "as faithfully as I can". He wasn't just doing it once or twice either. Any time he appeared as an official he was in a dress and fan with his hair done up. He posed for paintings in a dress as well.

The colonials eventually had him thrown out of office.

Though I guess he was just cross dressing, not gay, (though I've never read anything that actually talked about his prefernces... just his dressing habits) so there is a difference.

Hehe.. I dunno that I'd be focusing on the openly gay part as much as I would the "only came out of the closet becuase of a scandal that would have been worse had he let it happen" part.

And of course the good people of NJ didn't actually *elect* an openly gay governor... I think that would be a real milestone.
