Having random forwards and hysterical "protect yourself!" mail from people I know coming into my work account annoys me. Having that mail devolve into a little cat fight because people have no sense of politeness or respect for other's opinions and concerns annoys me more. Having the main insult be "that's gay" and "he's gay" just pisses me off.

I play online games where other people can chat along while playing. MMORPGs are havens for the illiterate, inane, and sub-moronic. It's HUR HUR HUR funny to have toons strip and dance, to do the "chicken dance" emote at people over and over and over, and to dig deep and come up with "yur gay" from the arsenal of hilarity.

These people don't mean "you're weak" or "that's weak" or "that sucks"... which would be bad enough if they did because "gay" isn't synonymous with any of that. What they MEAN is "you're a fag". Sometimes they just go ahead and say it. But most of the time they just say "gay". I don't know why it makes me so damned mad, it just does. It hits my ear the exact same way "spic" does. Which is interesting becuase the person who said it first is a latina woman married to someone who is part latino/ part jewish. GRRR...

Ah, I remember trying those, long ago. My dreadful connection was about 30% the cause of my resignation. The imbeciles like this were the remainder.

I'm not sure if it's more or less annoying when people do it in person. It's easier in person to pretend you actually are, just to throw them off balance, but then it's also more possible to throw heavy stuff at them.

There's this whole "don't be a fag" thing among younger males. The thing is, they're usually fine with being confronted with an actual homosexual... they just still use "fag" and "gay" as insults. There are these varying degrees of homophobia and discrimination that are okay and accepted. Like, it's fine to call other guys "fag" as an insult, but to do it to actual gay men would be bad. To me that's like... sitting around with your white buddies calling each other "nigga" but knowing damned well you should say it to an actual black man.

And it does sound exactly like a racial epithet. I'm not sure what category you'd but it in... but that's what it seems like anyway... that same level of hate-speech. If someone does it in person, I just lay it out for them. Over email, getting copied to people I don't know, etc. ehh... it's a little more difficult to make yourself understood.

I've attempted to play several and this is honestly the only one that's kept my attention. I can just /leave any channel and not have to deal with anyone talking, really. But so far ignoring on an individual basis has worked fine becuase I don't do a lot of grouping up with people, so I don't really *have* to talk to anyone.

"'protect yourself!' mail"? Protect yourself from what?

If it weren't for /ignore *username*, I would have stopped playing Anarchy Online a loooong time ago. Once you've filtered out the top dozen idiots, there are also a fair number if interesting human beings out there.

As for the stripping and dancing bit... there's this one female char. on AO, who does "lap dances" for about 5k credits per minute. Which would only be stupid and pathetic, except that people actually pay. There's nowt queer as folk.

"Gay" is such a weak insult. I mean, really. What's wrong with, "You take it up the ass so much you've got shitstains halfway down your legs"? If you're going to insult people for being gay, do it right.

This time it was "protect yourself from having people look up your personal info online." Usually it's something like that. Hysterical "OH MY GOD, YOU CAN FIND STUFF ONLINE!" mails from bored housewives that get passed around by bored housewives. I even recently got the "AOL/ Microsoft/ Intel "email beta test", you'll be paid per forward" thingy. I cannot believe that thing still exists.

Blizzard doesn't allow a long enough ignore list. I think it's a set number and then people start getting bumped. Believe me, I'm sure that twit I ignored 14 levels ago is still a twit and should remain on my ignore list, dammit.

The thing is, they aren't being insulted for *being* gay. Being Gay is the insult. If it were "you are SO gay" being said to someone who actually IS... that would be different.

It also didn't help that the person who said it in the mail is already someone that rubs me enitirely the wrong way in general.

So you think Bella was REALLY just saying "Pablo owns a lot of pink shirts".
