In love with this song

There's a devil waiting outside your door
There's a devil waiting outside your door
It is bucking and braying and pawing at the floor
And he's howling with pain and crawling up the walls
There's a devil waiting outside your door
He's weak with evil and broken by the world
He's shouting your name and he's asking for more
There's a devil waiting outside your door

Since the world began
Forever, Amen
Till end of time
Take off that dress
I'm coming down
I'm your loverman
Cause I am what I am what I am what I am

L is for LOVE, baby
O is for ONLY you that I do
V is for loving VIRTUALLY all that you are
E is for loving almost EVERYTHING that you do
R is for RAPE me
M is for MURDER me
A is for ANSWERING all of my prayers
N is for KNOWING your loverman's going to be the answer to all of yours

Till the bitter end
While empires burn down
Forever and ever and ever and ever
Amen I'm your loverman
So help me, baby
So help me
Cause I am what I am what I am what I am
I'll be your loverman!

There's a devil crawling along your floor
There's a devil crawling along your floor
With a trembling heart, he's coming through your door
With his straining sex in his jumping paw
There's a devil crawling along your floor
And he's old and he's stupid and
he's hungry and he's sore
And he's lame and he's blind
and he's dirty and he's poor
Give him more
There's a devil crawling along your floor

Here I stand
Forever, Amen
Cause I am what I am what I am what I am
Forgive me, baby
My hands are tied
And I got no choice
No, I got no choice at all

I'll say it again
L is for LOVE, baby
O is for O yes I do
V is for VIRTUE, so I ain't gonna hurt you
E is for EVEN if you want me to
R is for RENDER unto me, baby
M is for that which is MINE
A is for ANY old how, darling
N is for ANY old time

I'll be your loverman!
I got a masterplan
To take off your dress
And be your man
Seize the throne
Seize the mantle
Seize the crown
Cause I am what I am
What I am what I am I'm your loverman!

There's a devil lying by your side
You might think he's asleep
but look at his eyes
He wants you, baby, to be his bride
There's a devil lying by your side

Loverman! Loverman!

carbuncle squeezing, Karl Marx and
Loverman video

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have two of my three favorite songs by any artist:

There She Goes My Beautiful World - live and slightly unhinged

Bring It On - In an interview, Nick Cave said that he asked the director for this what kind of videos does MTV show these days? (aside from none)

The answer: "Scantily clad women wiggling their asses."

Nick: "Right. Let's do that, then."

Their video for Babe, I'm on Fire is quite lovely, too.

Re: carbuncle squeezing, Karl Marx and
I never pegged you for a Nick Cave fan. That's awesome. Learn something new about you all the time.

Of course I should have known... you are a bad, bad man.

The Martin Gore cover of Loverman is just.. beautiful. He's a little more... I hate to say "soulful" because Nick Cave is as soulful as it gets... but more in the gospel choir sense of soulful. Big, vibrato voice with a huge range and you can tell he LOVES the song so it really brings something to it. I can't find a clip of the studio version but here he is doing it live. Brings a different sensibility to it than Nick Cave. Both versions are great though.

In Cologne 2003

And later with his daughter in a very loud hall where everyone flips the fuck out when she throws in a line

I made the mistake of finding the Metallica cover. And I want to pee in James Hatfield's eye. He has no funk, no soul, and no fucking business singing that song.

no pussy blues
My Cave fandom is fairly recent. The Birthday Party never did much for me...some of it is unlistenable. It wasn't until i heard Bring It On a few years ago that i decided to give him another shot. Abattoir Blues is a bloody fantastic album. His new Grinderman album is pretty good, too.

FYI, you can download some live recordings of Mr. Cave in the Multimedia section here (free registration required). My favorite is a solo version of "The Ship Song" -- just him on the piano -- from Jan 22, 1999 in Antwerp. It's fucking intimate, romantic, and makes me want to make sweet, sweet love to pretty much anything...animate or inanimate.

The Martin Lee Gore version was quite good. I pretty much hated all Depeche Mode except Enjoy the Silence. Even with that, i greatly preferred hard/metal covers of the song versus the original. Of course, i've successfully managed to avoid Depeche Mode since college.

I'll try to listen to some of his other solo stuff with an open mind.

Re: no pussy blues
his solo stuff is more blues/soul sort of things on the whole.

For Depeche Mode... on the whole, I greatly prefer their non-singles to their singles. Their later albums, especially Violator, Ultra, and Songs of Faith and Devotion are very different feeling than the earlier straight synth pop stuff. I also know that I'm a big weirdo for basically never hearing anything other than a couple singles when I was younger and then really absorbing their whole catalog over the last year or so.

I'm come and go with Nick Cave. I don't think there is an entire album I love or hate.
